"My desert sheep hunt began when I succeeded in acquiring an El Vinco Biosphere tag at the Eastern FNAWS banquet. I decided to bring Heidi Gutfrucht along on this hunt. I had hunted Stone sheep, mountain goats and moose with her in B.C. She had hunted California bighorns in the Chilcotin before owning and operating Northwest Ranching and Outfitting where she guides for Stone sheep. We flew into Loreto on December 11th. Alonzo, Leon and Isreal from the Biosphere met us at the airport and facilitated our processing through customs. We then drove north three hours to base camp where we stayed overnight. The next morning we headed over to the place where we were to pick up our mule pack string and head into the mountains. Ramone, one of the Biosphere guides, spotted a ram on a mountain while we were traveling to our departure site. The ram appeared to be a good one so our original plan was aborted and we spent the next five hours closing the distance on this ram the ram was old and heavy but broomed back further than I like so I passed on him. We spent the rest of the day glassing this mountain and looked at quite a few of six to nine year-old rams and a herd of ewes. The next morning we again set out to meet the mule pack-string. We loaded up and headed up a mountain that would lead to a long rim we would follow to get into the area they planned on hunting. We were nearing the top of this mountain when Heidi spotted a ram just below the skyline on this mountain. One look told me this was the ram I wanted but by the time I could get the rifle on him he bedded down behind a boulder. We could only see his horns and face as he watched us. The standoff lasted for three hours. When he stood up, one shot put him down for good. Once back in camp the biosphere guides Alfredo, Luis and Ramone carefully measured the ram and came up with a green score of 181 6/8. the bases were 16 ½" and the length was 36 1/2. The people at the biosphere could not have been nicer. We both really enjoyed our time with them and would have liked to have hunted longer but I couldn’t pass a ram like this! Leon and Isreal took care of us until we were through Mexico customs and ready to depart the plane. I highly recommend this hunt."
