PATRICK HENDREN’S CFNAWS : November 2007
"My quest for Rocky Mountain big horn sheep began in 1989. I drew a tag for my first sheep in 1990. My dad, Marshall Hendren and I began scouting the area a month ahead of the hunt. A two day horseback trip beyond the end of the road on the main Salmon River would be were we spent the next twenty four days in search of my ram. After leaving camp with my sheep we encountered Stanley Potts. After visiting with him I figured out that if I took up guiding with Stan I could continue to be involved with hunting bighorn sheep. The Bruneau desert out of Mountain Home would be my next hunt in 1993. This time my oldest daughter was able to join me in search of a California Bighorn. Although we saw sheep I was not able to get on the one I wanted, so consequently we went home empty handed. I was lucky enough however, to draw again on this same hunt in 1996, and guiding myself, I was able to harvest a nice ram. In 1996 I also had the opportunity to book my first guided hunt. Art Thompson of Gundahoo River Outfitters led me to my Stone sheep. To make the trip even better my dad was able to go with me and harvested a real nice moose while on the trip. I really enjoyed the hunt and was impressed with
how well they treated us. Thanks Art! In 2000 while attending the FNAWS Convention I met Eric Mikkelson of N.W.T. Outfitters and booked my Dall Sheep hunt. I harvested my ram on the same day my first grandson was born. The guides were very knowledgeable and did a great job to provide me with an excellent hunt. The desert bighorn was the most difficult tag to draw. I spent eleven years receiving sorry letters from every state I tried try to draw in. In June of 2007 my brother called to congratulate me, I said, ’On what?’ Having looked up the draw on the computer he saw that I drew Unit 215 northeast of Hawthorn, NV. I was so excited! Finally, I had the opportunity to get my Nelson Desert bighorn. I visited and booked my hunt with Sean Shea of The Head Master, Inc. in Reno, Nevada When Stan Potts heard I drew he wanted to go too. Stan and I left for Reno on the 8th of November. On the fourth day of my hunt I did it, I completed my CFNAWS! I really appreciated Sean, as he went the extra mile to see that I got a large ram!"
