WSF Legislative Affairs Update 8/2021

One of the critical components to Mission accomplishment for WSF is engagement in legislative and policy matters that can positively or negatively affect wild sheep and their habitats. These matters also include supporting sustainable use, conservation funding, and the traditions of hunting. WSF has a Legislative Affairs Committee (LAC) that meets via phone conference weekly, led by our contract lobbyist in Washington DC.

If you know a bit about wild sheep behavior, you know that they rely on their keen eyesight to detect predators (e.g., wolves, cougars, coyotes, golden eagles, etc.)

The better a wild sheep can see, the more efficiently and safely they can forage, and the further they can feed away from escape terrain.

WSF Volunteers – Black Hills Bighorn Habitat Improvement

Toiling under the hot mid-July sun, more than 25 bighorn sheep conservationists gathered July 17-18, 2021, in Custer State Park (CSP), in the Black Hills of South Dakota, for a volunteer project to improve bighorn sheep habitat. While no comparison can be made to the hordes of bikers/motorcyclists that descend on Sturgis, SD every year, our band of volunteers was every bit as intrepid and energetic as any Black Hills visitors would be. The weekend’s goals were to cut down 4-9” DBH Ponderosa Pine seedlings that have re-generated on two sites totaling more than 13 acres since the 2007 Four Mile Fire in CSP.
