Farm Bill - Action Alert

September 21, 2018

Dear WSF Membership,
Wild sheep are a treasure to this country, but are now considered a bargaining chip in the Farm Bill being finalized in Washington, D.C.
Senators and Representatives from the states below are involved in finalizing the 2018 Farm Bill.  Currently, there is a proposal that would multiply the likelihood of pneumonia transmission to wild sheep by making "vacant grazing allotments available to a holder of a grazing permit or lease," if that woolgrower is forced to move, "because of a natural disaster, court-issued injunction, or conflict with wildlife”.  It's called "Sec. 8338 of the House Version." This means the Forest Service and BLM could move domestic sheep to vacant allotments without checking whether bighorns are already there or whether that allotment has already been vacated to protect bighorns.
If you live in one of the states listed below, please follow the appropriate number to ask your member of Congress to, "oppose Sec. 8338 of the House Version of the Farm Bill in the final conference report."
Here is why:
1.  It would kill bighorn sheep by multiplying the spread of fatal pneumonia.
2.  Hunters and woolgrowers are already working on solutions to these problems on the ground - no top-down Federal mandate is needed.
3.  Congress has been rejecting this bad idea every year in the Appropriations committee.  Instead, that committee has encouraged the existing efforts of hunters and woolgrowers to resolve problems directly.
