November 21st was the first practice, with a full team of 14 new athletes. A waiting list for the team was developed in December. During the first meeting, only two kids owned their own bows. The rest of the team utilized WSF’s Genesis bows, developing skills right alongside the others. Christmas treated many members of the team well, as many returned in the new year with brand new bows and ready to learn how to release. In February, two traveled to Las Vegas to take part in three tournaments in three days. These included the S3DA National Championships (30 arrows), USA Archery’s Nevada State Indoor Championships (30 arrows), and the Vegas Shoot (60 arrows).
The Vegas Shoot is known as the largest and most prestigious indoor archery shoot in the world. Nearly 4,000 archers from over 50 countries compete in this one tournament. The two youth archers, both sporting official WSF jerseys, did their best. Luke Briant earned the status of Nevada State Champion for his division, taking 1st place in the Nevada State Shoot and also placed 23rd out of 47 archers in the Vegas Shoot. Rilee Brock took 3rd in her division for state and placed 15th out of 39 in her division in the Vegas Shoot. This will surely spark the rest of the team to compete in the many available tournaments coming up this spring. While at the tournaments, two families from Nevada liked their jerseys so much they were interested in getting one to simply wear, while another family made mention of them not knowing the “Sheep Show®” had a youth shooting team! All good recognition for the Wild Sheep Foundation while also inspiring the next generation.
